Description
Remote Online Tutor-Led Course | Approx. 4 hours | UK CAA PPL
Ideal for students preparing for exams, or existing PPL holders as a refresher.
The Meteorology course provides pilots with the knowledge and practical understanding needed to improve confidence and accuracy in interpreting aviation weather. It focuses on applying meteorological knowledge to support safe and effective flight planning and decision-making.
Participants will revisit the key principles of aviation meteorology, including atmospheric structure, pressure, temperature, stability, and cloud formation. The course also covers fronts, air masses, wind behaviour, visibility, and weather hazards such as fog, precipitation, and icing. Learners will develop their ability to interpret METARs, TAFs, and weather charts, with a focus on practical application and real-world flying scenarios.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, learners will be able to:
- Understand atmospheric structure, pressure, temperature and density
- Explain stability, lapse rates and the formation of clouds
- Identify fronts, air masses, depressions and anticyclones
- Describe wind formation, gradient wind and local wind effects
- Recognise hazards including fog, precipitation and icing
- Interpret METARs, TAFs and weather charts accurately for flight planning
Assessment
There are no formal assessments during this workshop. The CAA instructor will check knowledge through activities and Q&A.
Suitability
Who should do this course?
This course is suitable for PPL students preparing for theoretical knowledge exams, licence holders who want to refresh their understanding, and pilots returning to flying after a break.
It is intended for those seeking to strengthen their confidence in aviation meteorology, including weather interpretation, understanding atmospheric processes, and applying weather information effectively to flight planning and decision-making.
Certificate
This course does not provide a formal qualification, but you will receive a certificate of completion that can also be placed in your logbook to demonstrate your commitment to continuous learning.
